The Labor Collages are a series of 44 handmade collages and 20 digital collages. They’re an exploration of semiotic relationships between labor and humanity.
Each of the images were created quickly, within a ten minute time limit. During that time, imagery and type were chosen and then assembled to form a final image. Each piece had a different prompt with the requirement that they must include found typography that amounted to whole words or better yet, full sentences.
Research for this projected came through a process of word association, building out a library of my own thoughts on the topic, as well as a research trip to John K. King bookstore of Detroit.
In the process of creating these, I found the means to take advantage of spontaneity. A design message can be sent easily if you trust in gestalt principles and have a good understanding of your message and how you relate to its deeper meanings.
